We have the original factory warranty. It retains its original interior in presentable order, but would benefit from a new carpet. The main structure is very solid; the underside is still in paint and appears to have had no significant welding. One jacking point may need replacing in the next year or two but otherwise it is remarkably clean. The bodywork needs minor attention to one or two battle scars and also the door bottoms and the previous owner has applied primer over the affected areas to prevent further deterioration. With the repairs done and a bottom half respray it would look very smart again. The paintwork and chrome have polished up way beyond our expectations. Mechanically the Prefect is in good order. It always starts without fuss and the engine is particularly sweet. It is a rev happy unit - one of Ford's best - and it will get the little car up to 55 mph in no time. The gearbox, brakes and steering all work well. It was originally built back in 1996 when it was known as “Orange Squashed” you can see the van on this site it was the cover car in Street Machine in February 1997. Since then it has changed colour from Orange / Red to its current colour of Red with Silver flames. Modifications: The roof has been professionally ‘chopped’ by cutting it into six sections and removing 7 inches from the height (I am over six foot tall and I can still fit). The sections were then welded back together and the gaps filled with specially stepped sheet metal to maintain the right proportions. The pillars were strengthened using steel box section tubing. The original van side panels were cut out and replaced with new steel sheet as the originals would distort during the chop. The rear lights have been ‘tunnelled’ and an aerial has been ‘frenched’ into the rear quarter. The passenger door handle has been shaved and the fuel filer has been moved to the rear wing. The rear doors have been welded together in order to make a one piece rear door. The grille is now flush mounted to the front end to make it look tidier. The bumpers have been removed and the holes have been filled. Saab door mirrors have also been added. The van is running a stock 3,500 cc V8 Rover SD1 engine with a Facet fast road fuel pump and Rover P6 manifolds leading into a home made side exit exhaust system incorporating turbo mufflers. The gearbox is a stock Borg Warner 65 automatic. The radiator has been changed for a VW Scirroco unit with Jaguar fans. The chassis has had extra bracing around the gearbox cross member plus three additional cross members between the main rails. The front suspension has been converted to Capri 2.0 struts with 25 %, 2 inch lowered springs. The steering rack is also a Capri item. The rear axle is from a 3.0 Capri (narrowed by 5 ¾ inches) to take the power of the V8 and has modified spring mounts to lower the car 1 inch. I had built a Ford Pop 103E in what some would say to be a very classic 70s style. You know the type (Jag back end, Viva front etc). After running around in this for many years, in 1995, I decided that it was time for a change. I was after a Model Y, however bad ones were too few and far between. I am a very firm believer that you should never cut up a good car (there are not enough good old cars left). I had seen several 100Es with roof chops, but not a 300E (this got me thinking). After cutting up and pasting several drawings, the plan was set. I managed to find a poor condition body shell (no running gear, interior etc). This was transported home and installed in the garage ready for action. The first job was the roof chop. Having never done one before it was a bit daunting, but you never learn if you don’t try. My plan was that because the body tapers towards the top, it would be easier to cut the roof off and then cut it into 6 pieces (SCARY). I am not sure if this is how the professionals do it, but it is too late now. Having removed 7” from each pillar, I then positioned the roof pieces back on using steel box sections inside the pillars to line it all back up and add some strength back. This left long gaps where the pieces no longer touched each other on the roof. I made strips to fill these gaps with stepped edges to make welding it together easier. After many days welding and filling, the roof was done (sound easy doesn’t it)!. The next job was the doors. I decided that once cut down they would look better if the quarter light was lost and a single window fitted. I say “window” loosely as they were so small that you couldn’t get a MacDonald’s small drinks container through it (mind you the van was so low that you would have to reach UP to the drive through counter). The rear doors looked stupid kept as 2 doors, so I decided to make them into one large door hinging sideways on homemade hinges (why buy something if you can make it is my motto). After many happy hours down the scrap yards with a tape measure, a Ford Capri 2 litre gave up its front suspension, and steering (the front springs were replaced with 2” lower ones). A Capri 3 litre gave up its rear axle, which was narrowed by 5 ¾ inches and mounted on shorter spring shackles and lowering blocks (down in the weeds was where this van was going). The engine was always going to be a Rover 3.5 litre V8 with an auto box (compact and lightweight). The engine went in a treat with only a small amount of relocation of the bulkhead and a new transmission tunnel (handcrafted round my own fair leg). I strengthened the chassis by adding extra cross members (you can never make it too strong). The front panel had the recess for the grille removed, so that there was room for the new bigger radiator and 2 fans to try and keep it cool. The seating position came about for 2 reasons. The first was due to how far the engine was set back, but the main reason was for the laughter that it would cause. When parked at traffic lights, the seats were so far back (touching the rear wheelarchs), that if you looked through one side window, you could see straight through the other side. You could not see anybody driving it, no matter how hard you looked. I still have a fondness for the 70s styles, so it called for the rear lights to be sunk down tubes made out of lorry exhaust pipe. The petrol filler cap was changed for a flush fitting one and the aerial was also frenched into the body. The biggest problem was getting the windscreen cut down. I hadn’t given it much thought when chopping the roof, but it proved to be very difficult to find anyone willing to cut it down for me. After asking around for ages, a windscreen company in London were recommended to me. They said they were willing to give it a try if I gave them a new screen and a template (no guarantee). They did it spot on first time. The screen was now so small that it was impossible to find any wiper blades small enough to fit and clear the whole screen. Using 3 Sierra headlight wiper blades and modifying 2 sets of mini wiper mechanisms found the answer. The side and rear windows were easy as they used flat glass rather than curved glass, much easier to cut down. After the experience of a useless person spraying my previous Pop and making a complete mess of it, I decided to have a go myself this time. I had never tried this before either, so my wife kindly donated her Mini for me to practice on (that came out quite nicely as it turned out). The paint colour choice was always going to be VERY Orange and it was always going to be called Orange Squashed. I was very pleased with the results and decided that I could do the interior as well. It passed it’s MOT first time and was then driven for many very happy miles. It was the most fun vehicle that I have ever owned. I noticed recently that it was for sale on ebay and can honestly say that whoever buys it will never stop smiling and will want to drive it at every opportunity. Why did I sell it you may say? I came across a 1930s Ford Prefect body shell and felt the urge to start all over again + my wife hated the van. I loved driving the cars that I built, but I also loved building them. I wished that I could have afforded to do both at the same time. The Richardson “Firm” were rivals to the notorious Kray Brothers, and in fact it was the murder of one of their members, George Cornell, in the “Blind Beggar” pub in South London which led to the arrest and subsequent imprisonment of Ronnie Kray in 1969. Ronnie (“The Legend”) subsequently died in Broadmoor in 1995, followed 5 years later by his twin Reggie, and both are now buried together in peace at the Chingford Cemetery in Essex. Reggie Richardson, who lived with his mother in Bexleyheath, Kent, bought the car for his mother who kept it for the next 20 years, but he sold it when she died in 1981. The transaction was carried out at night in a car park in Battersea, where the second owner timidly parted with a roll of fivers and hurriedly drove off into the darkness (he recalls the occasion very well). He kept the vehicle for another 27 years, the last 16 of which it has been stored in a lock-up in Bristol, from where it recently emerged into the light of day. Consequently the vehicle has only had 2 registered owners during its 48 year life, and still carries the original registration number 706 CXO (which is fully transferable according to the DVLA but it would be a shame if it is taken off the car). The mileage is 76,000, which is absolutely genuine and confirmed by the 2nd owner. Although the 100E design was introduced in 1954, the “Popular” version was not actually introduced until 1959, to replace the pre-war designed “Sit Up and Beg” Populars (which unbelievably were still manufactured until then). After several modifications later this is what it has become, a Ford/Chevy/Olds marriage of parts. I have street driven it for many years but not since 1986. It's been in storage since. Recently I had another motor overhauled and added a Doug Nash, fully syncro 5 speed transmission with a new heavy duty pressure plate and clutch disk with a steel bellhousing. Spec's on the 0.0 mile motor are as follows: Chevy 350 - 4 bolt mains, Balanced, Heads--stainless valves, 2.020 Intake, 1.6 exhaust and a roller cam. It has a narrowed Olds rear with custom axils and large bearings. There is a $345.00 fee for license and penalties to get it registered in Calif. It is my understanding that this fee applies to Calif only and not to other states. The vehicle needs a hydraulic clutch setup for drivability. I had a cable/leverage set-up for the clutch with the stock pressure plate but the new pressure plate is too strong for it. The vehicle has a slide then tilt front fenders and hood. As the pictures indicate there are some minor body/paint issues, scratches, small dents, etc. The exhaust piping and mufflers and the air conditioning are not installed, lost interest but just need to be bolted on. I started taking out that awful looking shag carpet, it looked pretty good during the hippy generation. There is plywood backing on the sides and inside roof areas, easy to glue new stuff on them and also the inside door panels. Motor and trans are complete, oil filter adapter is broke and motor condition is unknown. Radiator looks to be in good shape and gas tank has a hole the size of a watermelon:). Under the hood is the original 4 cylinder 1.2 flathead, motor is undisturbed runs great only has 43k miles same with transmission 3 speed manual (3 forward 1 reverse). Suspension was reworked and all new bushing installed, Gas tank was dropped and cleaned, water pump was sent off and rebuilt, all the electrical works just as it should, heat works,guages read correctly signal lights also, Original single barrel was recently replace with a 2 barrel holley(have original) Outside was Painted Cadillac Pearl white, inside was upholstered withs Ostrich and Suede; As for music a alpine sound system was added in, alpine cd player, small amp and sub to top it off, in pictures there is no headliner but its getting it put does need somethings, needs window gaskets, and original taillights were covered and current ones installed by previous owner, and needs some small details here and there but major work is done, could pass state inspection as it sits. If you look close it has the hole in the front bumper to use a manual hand crank. The car has been in the family since 1963, inherited by me after the passing of my father earlier this year, having been garaged and declared SORN since 1996. I have the original registration log book and V5. The mechanics are sound, after fitting all new w/cylinders, hub seals, stabilizer bar bushes and more. Engine starts and runs well, with a good gearbox and back axle. New battery fitted. The body requires attention in the usual places but wings, doors, bonnet and boot lid are basically sound. Welding is required to replace inner and outer sills on both sides (I have new replacements), plus some holes in the floorpan / footwell adjacent to the sills (see pics), and repair to rear wheelarch / sill joint. The chassis is solid in usual weakspots like spring hangers and strut mounts etc; but requires 2 x 3" top-hat outrigger sections that butt up to inner sill. Seats, door cards and headlining are in good condition, no tears or holes. The registration number, 60 BRL, is valued at more than £3500 (I have proof of offers made). Sadly I lack the skills required to weld the sills etc; and don't have the cash to pay to get it done. Hence my reason for selling. I have attempted to give as accurate a description as possible and have included photo's, but viewing is recommended prior to bidding. The previous owner had stripped it completely down to the shell and running gear. It was restored in the mid 90s to very good condition and I used it to go to shows. You may have seen it around if you attended shows in Kent and Sussex. Registration is GFO 229 I did a lot of bodywork repairs on it. New strut tops, 1 inner wing and battery panel, fabricated the window drainage channel and replaced the "felt" window channels, new cover sills, I think i fabricated a new jacking point on one side and some other patches. It came with spare lower tailgate that was in great condition and was painted and fitted. The interior is in good condition. New flooring was fitted and I had some mats made by an upholsterer. The car did not have a total re-spray as it had been done at some point in it's life and was still shiny. It has been stored in my father's garage since 2002 when I moved to America. I was hoping to ship it over but it's not going to happen. My father has been running the engine up to temperature regularly and keeping the tyres pumped up etc. It does not have a current MOT. It will need the brakes looking at for sure, due to the time it's been standing which is a shame because I fitted all new cylinders when it was restored. The handbrake cable snapped or "let go" on the day I moved it the garage. I didn't get a chance to look at with before I emigrated. Just a little work needed to put it back to very good condition. However, I need to sell it because I haven't got the space to keep it in or the time to restore it, and it will sit here indefinitely so I might as well let someone do the work I haven't got time to do! The car's interior is virtually perfect, with just a bit of wear to the Furflex round the doors, and slightly warped and discoloured millboard panels to detract from perfection (and these are very easy to replace, because the original style material is still available). The floor mats in particular are amazing - if you know 100E's, you will know that the floor mats are all but impossible to remove without tearing them, and completely impossible to store without creasing or tearing them once they are removed from the car. Of course, these have presumably never been out, so they haven't suffered. The headlining is also in absolutely superb condition, with just a little discolouration to the trim piece on the A-post. I have also sourced one of the incredibly rare and hard to find 3-bar grilles to go with the car (the original one is the post-October 1957 latticework one), The hubcaps need rechroming (although they are pretty straight, so the rechroming will be fairly straightforward), but the trim rings, being made of anodised aluminium, are in excellent condition, with just a few dings by where the hubcaps touch them and have been levered off. As far as I can tell, the paintwork is original - it has a lovely, 'patinated', 'barn fresh' appearance, and although the colour has faded and gone 'flat', I prefer cars to be like this because you can tell nothing has been bodged up to hide problems. According to the last service sticker on the car, it was last on the road in the 1980s, and it certainly looks as if no work has been done on it since then. The downside is that it has been stored in a Dutch barn all this time, and so although it has been protected from moisture coming down from above, it has been standing on a grass surface, and so the dew has risen up underneath it and caused rust in the underside. However, 100E's are simple cars, and most of the panels needed are easily and relatively cheaply available from Ex-Pressed Steel Panels. I have put pictures of the areas affected, so that you can see what you need to be able to do. The rust is basically in the 'typical 100E areas (wing bottoms, sills, inner sils, outer floor panels, rear wheel arch area and rear valance panel and battery box). All these areas are straightforward to reach and repair, and if you have access to a competent welder they are an easy job. The important structural areas such as spring hangers, McPherson strut tops, etc., are sound, because these tend to rust through when ther car is driven on salty roads, and this rust is from clean water rising up under the outer sides of the car. The bumpers need chroming, but apart from a small twist to the edge of the front one look completely straight (which is very unusual for 100E bumpers!). The back one is painted, but it looks as if it was done a long time ago, and no rust has come, so I guess it is a van or standard saloon one that someone has fitted at some point, as they were supplied unchromed. The mileage of the car is shown as 29873, and although I have no paperwork to verify this I would stake my reputation on it for the following reasons: a) this is the first 100E saloon I have EVER seen which still has the cardboard splash guards at the top and the bottom of the radiator - as these are so weak, they usually turn to papier-mâché within a few years and miles; b) this is the first 100E I have ever seen which has the little rubber cover over the foot rest by the side of the accelerator. The 100E that I have owned since 1976 had lost its one then, and that was 32 years ago and that car had only done 37000 miles at the time; c) the pedal rubbers, driver's seat and steering wheel rim are also in almost unworn condition, which again is a sign of seriously low miles, because these are usually the first areas to show wear; d) those amazing floor mats - there is almost always a hole where the driver's heel goes, on 100E's, because the rubber is quite thin and not actually that durable. There is no hole on this one, though! e) there is a sticker on the engine bulkhead which shows the next service dates, and although this is very faint, it looks as if it reads May 1983! There is no V5 with the car, but the chassis plate and number plates are present, and it is a simple matter to apply to the DVLA for a registration once the MoT has been passed. If it has not been reissued to someone else, they will usually allow you to keep the original registration. The engine turns over, but I have not tried to get it running, so its health is unknown. However, at this mileage I would be staggered if there were anything very much wrong with it. The clutch is stuck in the released position, so this needs attending to first of all. However, changing a 100E clutch was the first car job I ever did, and has got to be about the easiest one out there! Fire injun shared a garage with the dorset horn & at a meet at the pod late 77 both cars were written off in separate incidents that was the end of the old steel bodied fire injun the crashed car can be seen in that pic on the trailer. A comletely new car was built this time with a home made stretched & lowered fibreglass body. I`ve included one more picture this was taken at the tor line funny car meet at wroughton in june 75.
